James Frith, Labour MP for Bury North, has added his support to a campaign for a new law toughening penalties against people who assault shopworkers in the course of their duties during Respect for Shopworkers Week, which launched today.

The campaign, led by trade union USDAW, has received cross-party support. James and other MPs have signed a Parliamentary motion calling on the Government to introduce new legislation after new figures revealed that 200 shopworkers are assaulted every day.

James said:

“We expect shopworkers to enforce the law when it comes to selling knives, alchohol and tobacco and this can put them in real danger. Around 200 shopworkers are assaulted every day in the course of doing their jobs and it is vital that we provide them with the necessary protection. Many of the sentences imposed on those who assault shopworkers are far too lenient and I hope the Government will listen to shopworkers and act to toughen sentencing.”
